Friday 31st January 1997

Breakfast.

Assemble in Palmetto Room to collect briefing materials.

9.45am

Introduction and briefing by Elizabeth Virgo; Christopher Erskine, Australia; Andrew Stockley, New Zealand.

12.30pm

Lunch

1.45pm

Assemble in Palmetto Room.

2pm

Outdoor Activity Programme.

5pm

Return to hotel. Change for reception (into Lounge Suit, Uniform or National Dress).

5.45pm

Meet in front hall to board buses to reception.

6.30pm

Reception at Government House, courtesy of His Excellency the Rt. Hon Lord Waddington, GCVO, PC, QC, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda.

7.45pm

Return to hotel. Israeli team depart with hosts for tonight.

8.45pm

Light supper, then rest of evening free.

Saturday 1st February 1997

7.30am

Breakfast.

9am

Training for novice teams in Palmetto Room. Judges training (compulsory for all judges) in Poinciana Room. Free time for others.

10.30am

Coffee.

12pm

'Bye' Round (lunch served in preparation rooms for teams; everyone else eats in dining room during preparation period). All not debating to watch debates.

2.45pm

Break.

3.15pm

Individual Competition (Rounds 1 and 2)

7pm

Dinner

Free time for everyone to PACK and settle all bills. All your luggage must be clearly labeled and tagged with the ribbon supplied to make sure it is correctly sorted tomorrow.

Sunday 2nd February 1997

7am

Breakfast.

7.45pm

Assemble in Poinciana Room to board buses for Berkeley Institute.

8.45am

Greeting by Mrs. M Gabesi, Principal of Berkeley Institute. Timers and speakers will then direct teams to allocated rooms.

9am

Round One: This House would support a mandatory retirement age.

10.30am

Break.

10.45am

Group photo on front steps. Everyone to attend.

11.30am

Round Two: Impromptu

2pm

Lunch

3.30pm

Round Three: This House would expand the use of nuclear energy.

5pm

Two buses will collect those remaining at Grotto Bay Hotel and those returning there to meet their billets. Everyone else to return to assembly hall, identify and collect your luggage which will have been brought down from the hotel, then gather in teams to await the arrival of host families.

5.15pm

Billets arrive to collect visitors.

6pm

Buses arrive at hotel. Billets arrive there to meet visitors.

Monday 3rd February 1997

8.30am

Arrive at Whitney Institute, assemble in foyer of New Hall Building.

8.40am

Greeting by Mrs G. Graham, Principal of Whitney Institute. Teams will be taken to preparation rooms.

9am

Round Four: Impromptu

11.30am

Break.

12pm

Lunch -- in foyer area.

13.30pm

Round Five -- Impromptu

4pm

Depart -- return to billets.

6.30pm

Charter buses pick up at collection points and transport to "Palm Reefs".

7pm

Arrive at "Palm Reefs".

10pm

Buses return teams to collection points. Bermuda, Israel and Pakistan to make own arrangements.

Tuesday 4th February, 1997

9.45am

Buses depart from City Hall, Hamilton, for tour of island. Make your own way here.

4pm

Return to Hamilton. You will be dropped off at No 1 Shed on Front Street. The evening is free for you to make your own plans, but we must stress that you need to make your own way back to your billets - -and it is very important that you discuss your plans with your billets so they know where you are and when you plan to be back.

Wednesday 5th February 1997

8.20am

Arrive at Warwick Academy.

8.40am

Greeting by Mr B. Beacroft, Principal of Warwick Academy. Teams are then shown to allocated rooms.

9am

Round Six: This House would support a mandatory retirement age.

10.30am

Break -- refreshments will be available in the Assembly Hall.

11.30am

Round Seven: Impromptu

1.30pm

Lunch -- courtesy of Warwick Academy Association -- in Assembly Hall.

2.30pm

Regroup and board buses to Warwick Secondary School.

3pm

Greeting by Mrs P. Holder, Principal of Warwick Secondary School.

3.30pm

Round Eight: This House would expand the use of Nuclear Energy.

Break / Announcement of Quarter-Finalists (unless there is a really close decision which requires prolonged scrutiny).

Thursday 6th February 1997

Quarter-Finalists arrive at their venues (Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School for Girls, Saltus Grammar School, and Mount Saint Agnes Academy)

8.45am

Preparation for Quarter-Finals.

9.45am

Quarter-Finals: Impromptu.

12pm

As soon as the debate ends, everyone is to walk to "Pier 6" on Front Street where lunch will be served from 12pm onwards. Teams involved in the first semi-final will be driven to have an early lunch.

1pm

Preparation for first Semi-Final.

1.15pm

Buses leave for Bermuda College from outside "Pier 6".

2pm

Semi-Final 1: Impromptu

2.30pm

Preparation for second Semi-Final.

3.30pm

Semi-Final 2: Impromptu

5.30pm

Buses to Hamilton and free time.

7pm

Dinner and Individual Final at "Mariners' Club" on Richmond Road. Everyone to make their own way back to their billets.

Friday 7th February 1997

World Schools Debating Council Meeting, at the English-Speaking Union Building, Cedar Avenue, Hamilton

5pm

All assemble at St. Paul's Centennial Hall

5.30pm

Arrival of His Excellency the Governor.

5.45pm

Grand Final: This House believes that terrorism is justifiable in some circumstances. Chaired by the Rt. Hon. David Saul, J.P., M.P., the Prime Minister of Bermuda.

7pm

Debate ends. Presentation of awards by Lord Waddington.

8pm

Dinner & dancing for competitors & judges at the Harbour Room, No 1 Shed, Front Street.

12am

End of the 9th World Schools Debating Championships.
