Dear Colleague,
Enclosed please find the entry pack for the World Schools Debating Championships in 1999. We ask you (or the official contact for your country) read the three forms carefully and return them as soon as possible and certainly no later than Friday, December 4th. Please note that we are fixing a cap on the tournament at a maximum of 32 countries. Applications will be treated in the order that they are received; if yours arrives after the limit is reached we will place you on a waiting list and you may only be included if another country withdraws for emergency reasons. We apologise for having to do this but it is because of financial restraints and the many countries interested in taking part.
There are three forms to fill out. The first, the Team Entry Form, must be completed by one individual on behalf of the team who will act as the contact person for that team. The second, the Individual Entry Form, must be photocopied and filled out by every member of your delegation. The third is the Adjudicators' Application Form, which must be filled out by any prospective judge.
These forms must arrive together and be accompanied by a cheque or banker's draft for your registration fees. Those fees are as follows:
Coach (maximum 1) £100 or $170
Debaters (min 3, max 5) £100 or $170
Adjudicators (no max*) £100 or $170
Observers (max 3)** £225 or $380
* must be formally accepted by the Chief Adjudicator
** includes Assistant Coaches
Again, we are sorry that we cannot apply the lower fee to everyone but the number of people interested in attending has vastly exceeded our expectations!
We are also enclosing hard copies of the Rules and Adjudicators' Notes for 1999, which many of you have already received by e-mail. On the reverse of this sheet is some information on costs you may expect during your time in London.
Motions will be released no later than December 18th. These will include four motions for the preliminary debates and one for the Grand Final. You will not discover which side of the preliminary debates you will be on until the start of the Championships, nor who your opponents will be.
A final Newsletter will be sent in January to participating countries, including detailed information on how to reach the hotel and an up-to-date Timetable. You will be notified by e-mail when your entry has been received.
