Dear Colleagues,
You should have received your registration packs by now; please let me know if you have not.
OBSERVERS
The response we have had so far has been overwhelming in terms of numbers of people wishing to attend the World Championships. However, this means that I must break some bad news sooner rather than later. The number of people per country is exceeding our estimations and we will not be able to afford to subsidize everyone to the predicted extent -- so we are going to have to raise the registration fee for OBSERVERS.
The fee will now be £300 or $505 for observers. This will entitle you to 9 nights accommodation, three championship receptions and the final nights' dinner, plus coach travel to Oxford or Cambridge, plus the "break lunch" and dinner in Oxford/Cambridge. All other meals you will have to pay for yourselves, plus your travel in London.
We apologise for this increase but otherwise we might have to turn you away! Please note that [a] assistant coaches count as observers; [b] if you are organising your own accommodation or staying for only part of the
competition, we can negotiate; [c] countries that have already paid for observers (Canada and USA) can pay the difference -- or if you would like to withdraw your observers then of course we will refund the extra.
We hope by raising the fee at this early stage we will give countries enough time to make arrangements. Countries sending only 3-5 debaters, 1 coach and a judge or two will NOT be affected.
JUDGES
If you submit an Adjudicators' Form, you will be told in December whether you have been accepted by the Chief Adjudicator. Please pay your registration fee in the meantime assuming that you will be accepted as a judge (i.e. £100 or $170) -- if you are not, we will then offer you the choice of attending as an observer or withdrawing.
Judges who are sending in their Adjudicators' Forms on their own -- please note that you are also required to fill out a Individual Entry Form.
ENTRIES
7 countries have registered so far; there are 25 spaces.
ACCOMMODATION
I will be sending out more details on the hotel soon, including directions, how to book extra nights if you need them, and a form for indicating room-sharing preferences. Remember, you may pay extra to have a single room if you so desire, or you may elect to share a twin room with a named person, or you will be randomly allocated. Many thanks to Judy Scorpecci who will be handling this fun task as well as other matters concerning the hotel!
Thanks and all best wishes,
Trevor Sather
