Sponsors

Host & Principal Sponsor:  Singapore International Foundation

Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is a non-profit, non-government organisation established in 1991 to help Singapore's globalisation efforts. The Foundation is incorporated as a public company limited by guarantee, with a Board of Governors. Since its establishment, SIF has played a unique role in actively engaging Singaporeans in international volunteerism, forging people-to-people links, helping to shape Singapore's national identity.

The World Schools Debating Championships was one of SIF's key projects for 2002, under its Friends of Singapore Programme. This multi-faceted programme seeks to build a network of international friends and contacts for Singapore. It brings to Singapore visitors from all over the world including eminent world leaders, opinion-makers, legislators, civil servants, journalists and academics. The programme strives to develop strong people-to-people links through visits, exchanges, fellowships, scholarships and grants.

In addition to Friends of Singapore, SIF runs four other major programmes. They are:

Singapore Volunteers Overseas, which enables Singaporeans to engage in developmental and technical assistance work in developing countries, not unlike the work of Peace Corps.

Overseas Singaporeans, which aims to maintain links with Singaporean communities working, studying and living abroad.

Youth Expedition Project, which offers the youth of Singapore the chance to gain leadership skills and make meaningful contributions to communities in the region.

Humanitarian Relief Programme, which offers immediate humanitarian relief to communities in distress following natural disasters.

The Foundation’s programmes seek to connect Singaporeans at home and abroad with international communities in every area of endeavour, bringing Singapore closer to the rest of the world.

Organising Body:  Debate Association Singapore

Debate Association Singapore is a non-profit organisation formed in 2000 to facilitate the development of debating in Singapore. Members include adults committed to promoting the art of debating and public speaking in Singapore, members of past Singapore National Debating Teams, and students who are actively involved in the local debating scene.

The objectives of Debate Association Singapore are to promote English language development and argumentation in Singapore schools, provide an infrastructure and training for debate development in Singapore, and serve as a bridge organisation between Singapore schools and international debate organisations. The Association’s vision is therefore to play an active role in developing articulate individuals who are critical thinkers, who are at ease in presenting and defending their points of view, and who are sensitive to alternative points of view.

The organisation of the 2002 World Schools Debating Championship was Debate Association Singapore’s biggest project to date. Working with the Singapore International Foundation, the Association was privileged to be the organising body of this prestigious international tournament which brings together top school-level debaters from across the globe.
